I’m looking for good books on Samba notation.
I’d be interested in sheet music for large Samba groups and also notation for drumset. Just the same, I want to learn more and study other books.
I should contact the large Samba groups, there are a couple in Oregon complete with dancers and drummers.

Their roots can all be traced back to Africa, but still they need to not be confused.
Posting video clips of people playing latin rhythms is great, but let’s not confuse people by mixing styles. If you don’t understand the differences, it might be smart to not make suggestions or point people in a direction that you haven’t traveled down caripca. Tito Puente is an Afro-Cuban percussionist, not Brazilian or from the Samba School, therefore not a good resource suggestion for the original question of this thread.

Amazon does have ‘The Brazilian Sound: Samba, Bossa Nova and the Popular Music of Brazil’, and is highly rated, but I’m worried it is mostly narative and does not have notation.
Does this book have written parts? I would, but the Samba Troups are over a hour drive, and I probably don’t have that kind of discipline. I would like to study the sheet music they use. I am learning it with my left foot. September 16, I hope you realize that anything you want to learn about anything is available in a book! That does not mean that only a book can replace a good instructor or that you can not bautque from other ways. In Airto’s book he has a few pages of simple looking rhythms, so simple you might not think much, but then you work through and hear them you come to understand.
Syncopated rhythm is all about where the beats fall against the pulse, so to Samba you got to understand how it fits. Written notation gives you that with accuracy, then it can start to swing.

And also on Wikipedia!! I’m working on Brazilian rhythms on my ‘Roots Kit’ and will post more youtube stuff in the future at youtube. Here is a simple bossa nova based rhythm where I leave out the first note on the figure. I’m working this up at a fast tempo with the samba surdo bass line too.
